It never fails – every time I go to REI or out hiking, there’s some gangly, slightly weathered dude who just seems slightly embarrassed to be himself. He’s usually wearing shorts and a silly straw hat – and one of those “Life is Good” t-shirts.
Overall, I agree with the sentiment. Life is pretty darn good. But something about the forcefully cheery, hippie-ish grinning stick figures on those shirts has always struck my neurons in all the wrong ways. I can’t stands ‘em, I can’t. They seem hopelessly dorky, and they drip with a gooey, bland, conspicuous head-in-the-sand optimism. The wearers, often the Ichabod Crane meets Woodstock type, seem more like they’re trying to convince themselves than anyone else. Some sort of self-encouragement to keep eating their tofu and pretending they really don’t want the occasional burger.
On the other hand, while in Frisco, Colo., I ran into the “Life is Crap” parody brand. Its dark humor makes me grin in a way that the original brand makes me scowl. I can’t even figure out my favorite: The cartoony rake in the face? The penalty box? The ladies shirt with a woman wide awake in bed while her stick figure man snoozes?
I can’t pick it. Even the lame golf and Corona versions hit me better that the original “Life is Good” goo.
There were some other funnies there in Frisco, especially the “I Went Camping and Burned My Weiner” shirt, which I had to get for the drummer from Hung Dynasty so he could add to his collection.
One thing Life is Crap could do better – more ladies versions, including the crappy life situations that aren’t specific to women. My wife loves a few of the mens shirts, but they’re not available in women’s versions. So get on that, Life is Crap!

It’s funny that I found this post because just last weekend my uncle was sporting a “Life is Crap”shirt!
It seems that woman always have a hard time finding certain types of shirts made for them. It sucks for us!
