I have a travel mantra that makes people believe I’m crazy: Getting there is half the fun. I’ll say until I turn blue that I love flying.

And that’s why a friend at work asked me for advice about visiting Australia – and about which planes she could fly Down Under: “Will I fly the double decker?” she asked.

By that, I guess she means the Airbus Industrie A380, the first full double-decker airliner. Of course, the 747’s distinctive hump made it a sort-of double-decker – and an aviation icon that shrank the world.

Anyway, here’s what my co-worker might board when she heads to Australia in August of 2012 … though I suppose she could do something crazy and fly United (I’m willing for a U.S.-based airline to try proving me wrong, but I have yet to get the same service from a domestic as I do a foreign airline.).

One of V Australia's shiny Boeing 777s. (Photo courtesy of V Australia)

Boeing 747 – I already called it an icon. I also thinks it’s one of the coolest planes to ever take flight. Timeless from the outside. Inside, most of the 747-400s flying today could use an update – imagine how awesome the new 747-8i (for Intercontinental) will be with its 787 Dreamliner-based interior. Most of the Qantas and Air New Zealand flights will be a 747-400. Air New Zealand is arguably the better airline of the two.

Boeing 777 – Frequent flier love this one. It’s one of the more modern planes, and it’s supposed to be roomy and quiet. I haven’t flown it yet, but will in about a month when I go to Korea. V Australia has a brand-new fleet of them. One of my buddies is married to an Australian, and they like V
Australia quite a bit better than Qantas. BUT the Aussie AirPass(which can get you around Australia for a really good deal) and frequent flier mile alliances can make Qantas a better bet.

A Qantas A380. (Photo by Ryan Suneson)

Some Air New Zealand flights also use the 777, which got some rave reviews from the One Mile at a Time blog. Also important – Air New Zealand offers a reasonably priced Premium Economy class that gets you more legroom and a comfier seat. Well worth considering. And don’t even get me started on Rico.

Airbus A380 – The biggest one out there. The full double-decker. One thing I’ve heard is that the passenger load is so big that the baggage claim absolutely crazy. Word is it’s also really quiet. That’s what happens when the engines are so far away! If you want to fly and A380 to Sydney, Qantas flight QF12 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday is your best bet (at least according to Lifehacker.com). On other days, you’ll get the 747. Another way: QF16 or QF84 to Melbourne rather than Sydney.

Qantas is fired up about its new flights from Dallas/Fort Worth to Brisbane, Australia. And American travelers in the east and midwest should be, too. Today, Qantas started sending a 747-400 nonstop four times weekly to get travelers to Australia’s third-biggest city via Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport. Return flights will come from Sydney.

That means that people in the middle of the United States need not schlep to Los Angeles or San Francisco to visit Australia.

Lots of travelers would love to skip a trip to LAX. They’ll tell you it’s a grungy, nasty, unfriendly airport. That it’s badly laid out, confusing, flat-out unpleasant. I happen to like LAX – there’s something about the energy of a major intercontinental airport that gets me excited. Though I admit LAX has a worn-out look to it. And it could be more organized.

Anyway, more flights to global destinations is a great thing. These flights make it easier to get to Australia. The flights are $719 each way – not a spectacular bargain next to some of the sub-$1,000 fares from L.A. found in recent years. But with one less flight needed to hit the Qantas gateways in California, it might even out. And don’t forget the time savings.

I’m not surprised Qantas is choosing Brisbane as its outbound gateway. I’d bet it’s about weather: Sydney sometimes gets socked in by clouds in the early morning when flights arrive from the U.S. Brisbane is reliably – almost notoriously – sunny. I learned about Sydney’s fickle morning weather the hard way … my flight to Sydney suffered the diversion to Brisbane. We had to refuel, as did many other arriving flights bound for Sydney. That caused a delay of a few hours – and some folks headed ultimately to Brisbane missed their connecting flights from Sydney, and Qantas wouldn’t just let them off while we were fueling. Kind of a bummer.

And you’ll find plenty of activities in Brisbane – pronounced “Brizzbin” and known as Brizzy to its residents. I love it. It’s world-class city in its own right, but horribly underrated. It’s walkable and vibrant. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, it seems like more than half the population is biking, running or swimming at any given time. Visitors can get acquainted with the city with a ride on the CityCat.

If you can time your visit with the city’s annual Brisbane Festival in September, you’re in for an extra treat. The 22-day-long festival starts with Riverfire, a wild fireworks display along the Brisbane river.

The city gets pretty wrapped up in this yearly shindig. Hotels might be scarce during that time, so plan ahead. If you can find accommodations near ANZAC Square, you’ll have more than a great view: You’ll also be close to fun spots like the City Botanic Gardens, The Brisbane Brewhouse, Queen Street Mall and the museums on the South Bank.

Since I live in Phoenix, the flights from DFW don’t do much for me. But you Middle America and East Coast folks – you’re in luck!

Something just made me think of my 2007 trip to Australia.

It’s a memory of just one moment – one single moment – when I felt that gurgling in my belly and the resonance of my heartbeat. It was anticipation of something great about to begin. This one memory is far more potent than any recollection of Christmas morning as a child. It was that sense of “yes, I really am about to do this!”

It was a seemingly mundane span of seconds as our 737 taxied along at LAX. The sun was down. Sarah and I were looking out the window during the taxi toward the gates.

And wouldn’t you know it? We just happened to be on the right side of the plane, rolling along the right stretch of pavement.

At least the end of the trip offers the solace of one more flight.

We passed the gates where four Qantas 747s were lined up. They were gleaming-white, beautiful, illuminated by banks of floodlights. I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

I hadn’t been on a 747 since I flew to Germany in about 1979. It’s an iconic plane. And seeing four of them in the lights with their very distinctive kangaroo emblazoned on their red tails made them look even more spectacular.

I’d like to think a vision like that can restore some love of flying for even the most jaded among us.

Just say the words “I’m checking in for the flight to Brisbane/Singapore/Stockholm/Cape Town.” To me, those words taste great … like verbal grilled swordfish, a gooey brownie taking the form of words.

Is flying comfortable? I’m 6’2, 205 pounds. I don’t fit easily into a coach-class seat. My butt will fall asleep. I’ll flop around in search of elusive relief from the numbness. I know this.

But I embrace it. Because everything on the opposite end of the flight is worth it. I willingly tolerate long hours in the air so I can see a lot more of what the world offers. C’mon, isn’t that worth a little soreness?

You can count on seeing all sorts of crazy things in Australia – termite mounds, bizarre rock formations, sharp-beaked and cantankerous cassowaries, just to name a few.

But it might be a hotel that leaves you scratching your head most.

I’d have to rank the Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn as one of the craziest hotels in Australia. Just being in the deep Outback town of Jabiru in the famous Northern Territory puts it on the list. Being built in the shape of a salt-water crocodile takes it into the upper echelon of wacky. And it surely has to be the most unusual Holiday Inn ever.

So is it kitschy or cool? I can’t say first-hand since I only drove through Jabiru with Wilderness Adventures guide Amy and a crew of other loons. We stopped long enough for wallaby meat pies and some oil for The Possum before heading back out. While images of kachinas, cowboys and Kokopelli statues raise the hackles of Arizonans like me, Aussies are more laid-back about embracing the touristy elements of their area. So they probably get a few laughs out of it.

As for you … if you’re staying in Jabiru, I say go for it. The Gagudju Crocodile could be a really fun departure from the usual bland hotel experience. It’s also owned by indigenous people, so you may get some insights from the staff.

While you’re in the Top End, think about adventuring into the Kakadu National Park, which is 60 by 120 miles of rugged territory filled with wildlife. It’s definitely one of the Northern Territory’s main attractions. I don’t recommend renting your own car and going off into the Kakadu, though. It’s best to grab a knowledgeable guide to navigate the trails – and to know where the crocs are lurking!

When Sarah and I were in Australia, we met a traveler from Ireland. She was single, in her late 20s, active.

She told us about all the trouble she was having getting other lone travelers to hike with her.

Well, she didn’t actually say “hike.” That’s not the Irish vernacular for “stomping around in the dirt in big boots.” For our Irish buddy, that’s known as “hill walkin‘.”

Wandering Justin shows us how to tramp.

But, you pair this with an Irish accent, and you get … “hell walkin’.”

So she was probably scaring everyone away with the threat of walking into Beelzebub’s own nature preserve.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to witness any such mix-ups in New Zealand. There, “hiking”/”hillwalking” is known as … wait for it … tramping! Yes, you and your best friend can spend weeks tramping around New Zealand.

You can make what you will of the phrase Australians use … bushwalking!

“Trekking” is another word that’s common for long-distance hiking. But really, it’s nowhere near as fun as these others.
Interestingly enough I stumbled on your post thanks to the mention of the word 'tramping'. It makes it nice n' easy to program a Google Blog alert for mentions of the NZ outdoors. To be honest the only strange looks I've ever had about the word 'tramping' have come from Americans. :)

With a few exceptions, it's nearly always used to describe overnight or longer trips, which are common here. If I wasn't staying somewhere overnight, I'd usually call it a daywalk, or maybe just a walk depending on the details. I think the word actually has a German origin, although the exact origin seems a bit unclear. We discussed it a while back in a thread over here.

February 10, 2011, MikeM writes: Oh, and since shifting to Australia a month ago I've found the terminology here completely new. They use 'bushwalking' as you mentioned, but anything longer than a day seems to be a 'pack carry'. Clubs also really like the term 'base camp', which seems to be setting up a camp somewhere and then going out for daywalks before returning to camp.

February 10, 2011, WanderingJustin writes: Thanks for dropping by! I have to say there is no place better for overnight and longer trips than NZ. My wife and I want to come back with our tent and hit the Tongariro area again along with a few others. And you don't have to worry about all the poisonous/venomous/hungry creatures like in Australia or here in Arizona where we live!

I'll have to check out your thread. I'm always up for hearing slang/terminology from other countries.

And yeah, tramping means something entirely different to us :D! It's a bit dated, something my grandma would say, but still good for a laugh!

Related posts:

The World Hates American Travelers – Fact or Fiction?

Awesome info coming …

An American Runs Iceland – Reykjavik Midnight Run 10K

Adventure in the English Lake District

Travel Writer Annoyances – Haggling Abroad

Copyright © 2008
This feed is for personal, non-commercial use only.
The use of this feed on other websites breaches copyright.
The New York Times article "The 41 Places to Go in 2011" is nothing but a guidebook to sucking money from your pockets while making you act like the docile, vacuous, stereotypical, Hawaiian shirt-wearing American tourists. It's not worthy of what's supposed to be the nation's flagship paper.

I’m having a great laugh at the expense of The New York Times. Why? It’s article “The 41 places to Go in 2011.”

Why 41? Who knows?

What’s bad about the list? Each choice and its description is designed to make Americans go places and be Stereotypical American Tourists™: Go to Santiago so you can see the Lollapalooza music festival. Go to Iceland so you can listen to an orchestra. Go to Oahu for hula lessons. Go to Melbourne and eat at Gordon Ramsay’s (who is not Australian!) restaurant. Go to Budapest so you can drink in pubs. Visit Thailand and do yoga.

Please. How dull. Vacuous. Intellectually bankrupt. Incurious. Tame.

No wonder Americans don’t travel. From the descriptions, none of these places sound worth braving the ministrations on the Transportation Security Administration. This list exists to suck money from your pockets while doing exactly the same crap you would do in any major American city.

Even when I agree with the destination, I shake my head at the recommended activities. It irks me that The New York Times would recommend sending people halfway around the world to sit in bars. The list is shorn of any sense of adventure. I suspect it’s an article designed to get the well-heeled to book trips with advertisers, all for the purpose of saying at the next wine and canapes party “Well, when I was in Budapest …”

The description of Iceland, for instance, boiled down to this: “Hey, its economy crashed, so it’s cheaper than ever. And it’s getting more like New York – cultured and stuff! You can see an orchestra there!” It contains not one whiff of the drama and rawness of the scenery, the weirdness of a never-ending summer day, the cultural quirks. It patronizes the entire country with a paternal “aw, how cute … it’s growing up and becoming like us.” Nice.

Look, people … if you’re going to travel, get stuck in a little. Break out of your usual mold. DO NOT go to Starbucks unless you need to use the bathroom. Eat something that might upset your sensitive little tummy. Go somewhere off the main tourist drag – and hope you get lost.

And obviously, don’t get your travel ideas from The New York Times if you wish to have any fun on your trip.

Go beyond "G'day, mate."

I love language, especially slang. When I got the chance to have Samantha Deavin write a guest post about Australian slang, I couldn’t resist. I’m sure you’ll enjoy her writing (and choice of slang) as much as I do. Now, my fellow Americans, quit talking about going to Australia and go do it! -Wandering Justin

People often talk about ‘cultural barriers’ when they travel overseas, and how it can be difficult to understand the intricacies of different cultures, languages and ways of life. While this can present a challenge, it’s also one of the best things about travelling – learning about and negotiating different customs and the idiosyncrasies of different people all over the world.

Situated all the way ‘Down Under’, the Aussies have a whole vocabulary of unique lingo that is much more extensive then ‘G’day’ and ‘mate’. If you’re on the next cheap flight to Sydney, then learn this Aussie slang before you go and “you’ll be right, mate!” Just remember that Australians have a tendency to abbreviate just about anything.

-Arvo – An abbreviation for afternoon. When an Aussie says ‘this arvo’ (which happens a lot!) they mean ‘this afternoon’.

-Bottle-o. An important one for those who like to party to know! If you visit the bottle-o, you’re visiting the bottle shop or liquor store.

Go to Sandy Billabong and meet the "mozzies."

-Budgie Smugglers. Men’s bathing suits (speedos style) are referred to as budgie smugglers. A budgie is a small Australian bird – let your imagination explain this one!

-Dag. To be called a dag is to be affectionately or jokingly called a loser, nerd or someone who lacks style or sophistication.

-Esky. Aussie beers go in the esky – the Australian name for a cooler or ice box.

-Fair Dinkum. Australians refer to something as ‘fair dinkum’ if it is true or genuine.

Croc? No worries ... as long as you don't fall out of the boat.

-Grog. Grog is an Australian slang word for alcohol. To ‘get on the grog’ implies the drinking of alcohol.

-Mozzie. Travellers beware of the Australian mosquito! In the summer months, whether you’re on Gold Coast holidays or in Perth, you’ll be fighting off the mozzies.

-No Worries! An Australian expression that communicates assurance, forgiveness or acceptance.

Mates don't let mates wear budgie smugglers. (photographer unknown, fortunately)

-Sheila. If you meet a woman when you’re in Australia, you’re meeting a ‘sheila’ – the Aussie slang for a lady.

-Barbie. Everyone’s heard the infamous quote ‘Throw another shrimp on the barbie!’ While Australians actually call shrimps prawns, the barbie refers to a barbecue.

-Thongs. In Australia, thongs do not refer to female underwear. Rather, they refer to rubber flip flops that are often worn in summer.

-Yewy. A ‘yewy’, often used in the phrase ‘to chuck a yewy’ and refers to a U-Turn when driving.

If you’re making a trip to Australian shores for a holiday or for an extended time as a student, travel in the Land Down Under will be much easier if you have a good grasp of Australian slang and lingo.

“You beauty!”
I travel to see new places. I bring tons of batteries and memory for the camera.
But often, it’s the people I meet who steal the show: the Icelanders, kiwis, Aussies, ticos, etc.
If you have some decent people skills, the locals are the ones who will really make your trip better. They’ll clue you in to cool places, give you an insider perspective to their home and maybe help you out when your plans go awry. And not because it’s their job – just because they’re being nice.
Sometimes, you never even catch their name. It might be just a quick conversation, but it sticks in your mind and is part of your vacation’s story. I’m not really talking about tourist industry folks who are paid to be nice, but people who you just run into randomly.
So in honor of the locals, let me share a few memories about some I’ve encountered:
Iceland – Stjarnan FC Soccer Fans
During our first night in Reykjavik, my wife and I wandered past a stadium. We quickly struck up a conversation with a bearded, staff-wielding character with blue and white face paint. He clued us into what was about to take place: an epic Icelandic Premier League clash between league leaders Fram and his team, Stjarnan FC (just about a month before it became famous for its goal celebrations). Moments later, we were seated near Ragnar and his crew as they beat drums, sang songs and clapped incessantly. This was a perfect example of what happens when [...]

This was a perfect example of what happens when you ask a local “hey, what’s going on here?”

Australia – Random Bloke in Darwin

Just after getting off the plane from Sydney to Darwin, my backpack took a flyer. A Swiss tourist mistook it for her own on the baggage carousel. Qantas promised to track her down (which they did). During the bus ride from the airport to the hotel, an Aussie made it his mission in life to cheer me up after my backpack ordeal. So began a steady stream of tall tales told in an accent so typically Australian that it made Paul Hogan sound like a Texan. And it worked – I was too busy laughing at his story about a giant snake menacing a local airport that I forgot about my missing bag and having to traipse all over Darwin to find it. Best line: “They put a hundred gallons of fuel in ‘im before they realized ‘e was a snake!”

Costa Rica – Roy

If you had a bunch of people lined up and had to guess which was Costa Rican, Roy would probably be your last choice. Blond-headed, blue eyed … and named, well, Roy! He’s one of the many ticos of European descent. He generously bailed us out after we missed the last bus from the waterfall garden to San Jose. My wife and I took a seat in his pickup truck, and during the 90-minute drive he told us all about living in Costa Rica – from the long lines to register a car to trying to get mail. We enjoyed the talk all the way back to his neighborhood in Heredia, and he refused our offer for gas money.

From Ragnar to Random Bloke to Roy, I’ve had the fortune to run into some great people. I could probably carry on about this at length. The bottom line – travel with an open mind. Welcome the random encounter – it just might become the best part of your trip!
I think it’s really fun to find quality microbrews while traveling. I get a chance to try something tasty, and I often get a chance to mingle with locals (in the case of my recent visit to the Lost Abbey/Port Brewing tasting room, I even met a friendly black cat). It’s also not super-hard to find good microbrewers and brew pubs.
For me, it’s way harder to find good coffee shops unless I’m someplace like Portland or Seattle. I was 0 for 2 on cappuccino during my recent visit to San Diego. I won’t name the establishments here … mostly because the second barista really tried hard to produce a good drink. She took her time, and the micro-foam was spot-on. Unfortunately, the coffee itself was way too hot and had a much more bitter edge than I prefer. For the solid effort, I can’t leave her and her establishment hanging out to dry.
If you travel to Arizona, of course, Arizona-coffee.com will not steer you wrong. But I need to start doing better research when I travel. Does anyone out there have any resources for finding great barista people all across the nation?
In Australia, New Zealand and Costa Rica, I’m pretty golden. It’s easy to find great coffee there. From what I understand, AUS and NZ have mandatory barista training that’s pretty extensive. Australia is pretty awesome because it also grows its own beans in Queensland. In New Zealand, it’s impossible to roll into even the smallest town and not find a pretty classy cafe. [...]
