I’m on the corner of 5th Street and Mill Avenue in Tempe, Ariz. It’s summer. Most of the students from Arizona State University have flocked home, so it’s relatively quiet.

But it’s not so sleepy that’s it’s easy for a car to turn onto Mill. Even with a green light, a steady flow of pedestrians makes it maddening.

This makes me think back to an even busier intersection in Auckland, New Zealand. But planners there figured out a way to get pedestrians and drivers to interact in harmony: Instead of “Walk” signals that correspond to the traffic signals, all vehicle traffic stops for the “Walk” signal. And you can cross on the diagonal to save a step. When the cars stop, it’s a pedestrian free-for-all in any direction. Apparently, this is called a Scramble or Diagonal crossing. See the videos below to watch the dance in action.

And when it’s car time, you don’t have pedestrians horning in. It’s all-clear for the cars.

This is one of many reasons why travel is such a great thing: You see new ideas and interesting solutions to old problems. In retrospect, this is an obvious way to get traffic moving better.

Here’s something funny: Los Angeles once had it (straight from the video) in the 1950s. It pulled the plug a few years later, and has brought a few back. But I’d never heard of it until my visit to Auckland. It’s a great idea, and needs to be in widespread use.

When Sarah and I were in Australia, we met a traveler from Ireland. She was single, in her late 20s, active.

She told us about all the trouble she was having getting other lone travelers to hike with her.

Well, she didn’t actually say “hike.” That’s not the Irish vernacular for “stomping around in the dirt in big boots.” For our Irish buddy, that’s known as “hill walkin‘.”

Wandering Justin shows us how to tramp.

But, you pair this with an Irish accent, and you get … “hell walkin’.”

So she was probably scaring everyone away with the threat of walking into Beelzebub’s own nature preserve.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to witness any such mix-ups in New Zealand. There, “hiking”/”hillwalking” is known as … wait for it … tramping! Yes, you and your best friend can spend weeks tramping around New Zealand.

You can make what you will of the phrase Australians use … bushwalking!

“Trekking” is another word that’s common for long-distance hiking. But really, it’s nowhere near as fun as these others.
Interestingly enough I stumbled on your post thanks to the mention of the word 'tramping'. It makes it nice n' easy to program a Google Blog alert for mentions of the NZ outdoors. To be honest the only strange looks I've ever had about the word 'tramping' have come from Americans. :)

With a few exceptions, it's nearly always used to describe overnight or longer trips, which are common here. If I wasn't staying somewhere overnight, I'd usually call it a daywalk, or maybe just a walk depending on the details. I think the word actually has a German origin, although the exact origin seems a bit unclear. We discussed it a while back in a thread over here.

February 10, 2011, MikeM writes: Oh, and since shifting to Australia a month ago I've found the terminology here completely new. They use 'bushwalking' as you mentioned, but anything longer than a day seems to be a 'pack carry'. Clubs also really like the term 'base camp', which seems to be setting up a camp somewhere and then going out for daywalks before returning to camp.

February 10, 2011, WanderingJustin writes: Thanks for dropping by! I have to say there is no place better for overnight and longer trips than NZ. My wife and I want to come back with our tent and hit the Tongariro area again along with a few others. And you don't have to worry about all the poisonous/venomous/hungry creatures like in Australia or here in Arizona where we live!

I'll have to check out your thread. I'm always up for hearing slang/terminology from other countries.

And yeah, tramping means something entirely different to us :D! It's a bit dated, something my grandma would say, but still good for a laugh!

Related posts:

The World Hates American Travelers – Fact or Fiction?

Awesome info coming …

An American Runs Iceland – Reykjavik Midnight Run 10K

Adventure in the English Lake District

Travel Writer Annoyances – Haggling Abroad

Copyright © 2008
This feed is for personal, non-commercial use only.
The use of this feed on other websites breaches copyright.
Snow is great when it first starts falling. But give it a month, and you’ll be ready to get away from it. So where should you go?

New Zealand, no contest. Here’s why.

1. It’s summer down there. But to most of us in the United States, a Kiwi summer is like a mild spring. You will only see snow on the tallest mountain peaks. Otherwise, it’s swimming/hiking/outdoor weather!

2. It’s cheap. One US dollar gets you about $1.26 in NZ dollars. And prices down there are just reasonable all around.

3. The scenery is off-the-hook spectacular. Tongariro National Park. The Southern Alps. Franz Josef Glacier. Queenstown. You won’t believe your eyeballs at any of these places – and I’m leaving out dozens of scenic spots.

Our "room" at Woodlyn Park. We even had the cockpit!

4. It’s relentlessly laid back. Want to relax? Even if you spend your whole vacation stomping around with a backpack, you will feel the easygoing Kiwi nature.

Getting There

You’ve got your choice of Qantas or Air New Zealand. Pick whichever has the best deal and schedule at the time. They’re both a treat if you’re used to flying domestic airlines. Don’t like long flights? Well, harden up, as the Kiwis would say!

The Skinny on Hotels

Hotel rooms in New Zealand often have kitchenettes. There are very few huge chain hotels. There’s also a lot of novelty (look no further than Woodlyn Park and its Hobbit rooms and the Bristol airplane converted into two suites).

Highlights

Wiggling through the Glowworm Caves

The Glowworm Caves in Waitomo are worth spending half your day underground. Rap, Raf ‘n’ Rock can set you up with a great tour. I also loved hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – if you’re up for it, you can summit the volcano that portrayed Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. Even two years after my visit, I’m still blown away by the full-day hike on Franz Josef Glacier, where Franz Josef Glacier Guides will walk you from tropical rainforest to the snout of a glacier before strapping on some crampons and hitting the ice.

Food

If you like fresh fish, lots of fruit and a heavy Asian influence, you will have no trouble eating in New Zealand. There are plenty of exotic and flat-out weird tastes, like possum pie and whitebait. Craft beer is also getting big among the Kiwis: Check out Croucher Brewing in Rotorua – they were not yet open during my visit, and I’m curious about them. Oh, and coffee! You’ll find a classy cafe with a skilled barista in even the tiniest towns. I guess I should mention the wine – I’m not a big wine guy, but people who like wine love what the Kiwis have to offer.

An epic day on Franz Josef Glacier.

City Scene

Kiwis would have you believe Auckland is a dystopian megalopolis straight out of Blade Runner – or nearly as bad as Las Vegas. In reality, it’s got a very pleasant, Seattle-like vibe. Wellington is cosmopolitan and fun, with music, arts, food and museums aplenty. Nelson and Queenstown on the South Island are much smaller, but with active nightlife and plenty to do, both indoors and out.

Getting Around

Rent a car on the North Island. I’d recommend buses for the South Island … the roads are a bit tricky. The occasional bout of rain and driving on the opposite side of the road won’t help you any.

Have a bite of possum pie, mate!

Odds & Ends

Bring some rain gear – New Zealand weather can change instantly. Sturdy boots are a must for the hikers. And bring a good camera. You’re not doing this scenery any justice if you’re using a cell phone camera, and I absolutely do not care how many megapixels it has.

Another thing: lighten up. Kiwis are talkers, and they’re very welcoming. In the U.S., I realize that their amped-up friendliness could seem weird. Maybe even creepy. Down there, it’s just the way people are. We could stand to learn from it, really.
Mt. Doom will rock your socks off.
Do you want to see cool stuff? Sure you do, or you wouldn’t be here.

Well, my fellow travelers at the Heading There blog are going to set you up. Heading There likes to round up interesting posts from bloggers around the globe. The Heading There crew picks a theme, and some fine writers kick in their contributions to inspire you to out and travel.

This week’s theme is … adventure! As you might guess, I have something to say about this – I pitched in with a tale about the glowworm caves in Waitomo, NZ. I’m flying the flag for Arizona travelers, even if not Arizona destinations this time. Also, you can (and should … nay, must!) check out what other travelers in Tom’s Blog Carnival are up to. He’s got people from all over the world finding some terrific destinations all over the map.

My favorite? Heather’s trip to the Mer de Glace. What’s cooler than glacier caves? Not a whole lot, really! Seriously, if you’ve not explored a glacier, it’s high time you did. It will blow you away in ways I can’t begin to explain.

Hmm, on second thought, it might be Simon and Erin’s tales about their visit to the salt flats in Bolivia. That’s been a destination rising up on my list like a giant bubble of good times.
I travel to see new places. I bring tons of batteries and memory for the camera.
But often, it’s the people I meet who steal the show: the Icelanders, kiwis, Aussies, ticos, etc.
If you have some decent people skills, the locals are the ones who will really make your trip better. They’ll clue you in to cool places, give you an insider perspective to their home and maybe help you out when your plans go awry. And not because it’s their job – just because they’re being nice.
Sometimes, you never even catch their name. It might be just a quick conversation, but it sticks in your mind and is part of your vacation’s story. I’m not really talking about tourist industry folks who are paid to be nice, but people who you just run into randomly.
So in honor of the locals, let me share a few memories about some I’ve encountered:
Iceland – Stjarnan FC Soccer Fans
During our first night in Reykjavik, my wife and I wandered past a stadium. We quickly struck up a conversation with a bearded, staff-wielding character with blue and white face paint. He clued us into what was about to take place: an epic Icelandic Premier League clash between league leaders Fram and his team, Stjarnan FC (just about a month before it became famous for its goal celebrations). Moments later, we were seated near Ragnar and his crew as they beat drums, sang songs and clapped incessantly. This was a perfect example of what happens when [...]

This was a perfect example of what happens when you ask a local “hey, what’s going on here?”

Australia – Random Bloke in Darwin

Just after getting off the plane from Sydney to Darwin, my backpack took a flyer. A Swiss tourist mistook it for her own on the baggage carousel. Qantas promised to track her down (which they did). During the bus ride from the airport to the hotel, an Aussie made it his mission in life to cheer me up after my backpack ordeal. So began a steady stream of tall tales told in an accent so typically Australian that it made Paul Hogan sound like a Texan. And it worked – I was too busy laughing at his story about a giant snake menacing a local airport that I forgot about my missing bag and having to traipse all over Darwin to find it. Best line: “They put a hundred gallons of fuel in ‘im before they realized ‘e was a snake!”

Costa Rica – Roy

If you had a bunch of people lined up and had to guess which was Costa Rican, Roy would probably be your last choice. Blond-headed, blue eyed … and named, well, Roy! He’s one of the many ticos of European descent. He generously bailed us out after we missed the last bus from the waterfall garden to San Jose. My wife and I took a seat in his pickup truck, and during the 90-minute drive he told us all about living in Costa Rica – from the long lines to register a car to trying to get mail. We enjoyed the talk all the way back to his neighborhood in Heredia, and he refused our offer for gas money.

From Ragnar to Random Bloke to Roy, I’ve had the fortune to run into some great people. I could probably carry on about this at length. The bottom line – travel with an open mind. Welcome the random encounter – it just might become the best part of your trip!
In the middle of a never-ending, steep, dismal scree slope, I paused to catch my breath. Just a few hundred feet more, I thought. That wouldn’t get me to the top. That would just get me to a collection of rocks where I hoped I could actually get some footing. I was burning tons of energy as my heart hammered and my legs burned. All for seemingly nothing, as I seemed to lose half the distance I’d gained with each step. I kept my eyes locked on the ground in front of me, because a glance in any other direction would reveal how far away I was from solid ground, how far I’d already climbed, and how far I still had to go – all before descending and hiking another eight miles or so.
Some people might want this day to end, and to never have to think about it again. But me … I think about climbing New Zealand’s Mt. Ngauruhoe every single day. There are three photos of it in my cubicle at work. It’s my Twitter page background. I would climb it every week if I could.
Mt. Ngauruhoe, and the Tongariro National Park surrounding it, is nothing less than completely bewitching, and they are the combined winner of my 2009 Destination of the Year Award.
I’ve given you practical tips for climbing Mt. Ngauruhoe in this blog before. I’ve fustigated National Geographic for bungling a story about Tongariro. But this time, I’m just offering a homage to a fantastic [...]

But this time, I’m just offering a homage to a fantastic place that continues to amaze me. It exceeded every lofty expectation I had of it. It physically wrung me out. Standing on the overhanging crater at its summit filled me with awe, and more than just a bit of fear – it felt like a strong enough wind could send me spiraling into the crater floor hundreds of rocky feet below.

There's a good chance you'll be in the clouds.

Ngauruhoe is considered in active volcano, and its slopes are riddled with bombs and carpeted in cinders. Toward the false summit, there’s even a small vent hole that constantly emits a stream of visible gas. The area around it is also strewn with tiny sulfur crystals. Its last eruption was in 1977.

The climb to the summit was the centerpiece of our day on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. But the entire hike has a lot to offer. Starting at the Mangetepopo Car Park, you’ll soon start walking up ancient lava flows before climbing a short, steep, 1,200-foot ascent called Devil’s Staircase. At the top, you’re at the South Crater. It’s your option to tack on extra hardship to summit Ngauruhoe or just finish the crossing. If you’re fit for it, do the summit. It’s amazing. It’s about 2,000 feet to the top from South Crater.

Even without climbing Ngauruhoe, you have another 1,200-foot or so climb to get to the top of Red Crater before descending toward the Emerald Pools and Blue Lake before the gradual downward slope to Ketetahi Car Park.

That’s the quick description. But let me tell you what really makes this special, despite being a pretty busy hike.

First, it’s incredibly barren and lunar. You’ll walk for hours without seeing a tree of a living creature besides people. Volcanic activity has absolutely scorched the area: In South Crater, steam rises from tiny fumaroles in the cracked ground. Larger fumaroles await throughout the rest of the hike, making it feel like the world is still creating itself.

It’s just incredible to be someplace so raw that still evolving around us. Think of walking just about anywhere else. Everything feels so finished and tame. Here in Phoenix, it’s all concrete, asphalt, manicured golf courses. There’s just a never-ending blandness about it – we’ve clearly shaped this land to our will. In Tongariro -and even in many other parts of New Zealand- that’s just not possible. Forces that make us small are still at work.

So go there. I promise a day on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing will do things for you that no trip to New York, Tokyo or Paris can ever do.

If you look through my site a bit more, you'll also find a post about Franz Josef Glacier. Another incredible and unforgettable reason to visit New Zealand.

Hey, I wound up in the New Times! They wanted to know what sort of edibles I’m slurping into my gullet. Check out Justin Schmid, What are you eating?. It features a photo of me menacing the camera with a half-eaten possum pie at the Sandfly Cafe somewhere between Franz Josef and Nelson in New Zealand.
Rene, our bus driver was thrilled as only a Naked Bus employee can be. During our break at the Sandfly Cafe, he went up to all the other passengers telling them that I was eating possum pie … he had very distinct “see, he ate it and didn’t die” tone in his voice. It was hysterical. When he was done telling everyone else, he wanted to talk to me about it.
“It’s easy to eat, i’n't, mate?” he kept repeating.
Awesome guy. Best bus driver ever.
The post also has me extolling the virtues of Sun Up Brewing, golden beets and other cool things I like eating.

This is pretty funny … someone came to my blog today to find out whether the poop of glow worms glows.
The answer is no – that’s because glow worms don’t poop. The glow that they make is their form of excretion. But rather than just launching solid or liquid waste, it converts the leftover matter into light that’s used to attract its prey. The glow worms dangle silky threads from their spots in their home caves. Insects see this and thinks they’re seeing stars, and fly toward the light. They get caught in the threads. Then the glow worms eat them, absorb the nutrients, turn the excess matter into light and begin the cycle again.
Really, that’s pretty fabulous. It takes stuff in, but leaves nothing but heat and light behind. That’s an incredible bit of evolution. And certainly, it has to be the envy of every mechanical engineer.
If you’re interested in seeing glow worms, there are a number of places in the world to do so. Of course, I’m pretty partial to Waitomo, New Zealand. Here are a few related posts:

The glow Worm is a pretty cool and environmentally friendly creature. Kills insects, provides no environmental foot print, recycles, no emissions energy conversion...should be an emblem for some sort of green movement.
