<p>Here&#8217;s an off-kilter self-portrait I took near the perlite quarries of Superior, Ariz. There&#8217;s plenty of hiking, and it&#8217;s a great place to find the semi-clear obsidian nuggets known as Apache tears. Just bring your rock hammer and some eye</p>

<p>protection!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also a great place to hold a hillbilly triathlon of shooting, ATV ridin&#8217; and beer drinkin&#8217;.<br />

<p>Light drizzle, a chilly wind, 45 degrees and overcast … it’s finally winter in the desert. I’m warm thanks to my Army battle dress uniform, gloves and balaclava.</p>
<p>And every run, dodge, dip and duck through the ruins of <a href="http://www.ghosttownaz.info/sasco-smelting-ghost-town-ruins.php" >Sasco, Ariz.</a> also keeps the chill away. The abandoned mining town is filled with foes firing torrents of plastic 6mm projectiles at me from replica assault rifles &#8211; I’ve lost count of every M-4, M-16, MP-5 and AK-47 I’ve faced.</p>
<p>This is my first-ever experience in an organized Airsoft game. And it’s a heaping slice of deep-fried gold.</p>
<p>Never heard of <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airsoft" >Airsoft</a>? I think of it as paintball done right … the guns function better, they’re less awkward, there’s no dye getting everywhere. The very realistic-looking weapons spew plastic balls somewhere between 300 and 500 feet per second. My <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/Echo1USA" >Echo1</a> rifle, one of its RedStar line of AK-47 replicas, straddles the middle. It’s not fancy or pricey, but it helps me hold my own. No malfunctions, just steady performance.</p>
<div id="attachment_4716" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/12/airsoft-first-timer/dscf2487-modified/" rel="attachment wp-att-4716"><img class="size-medium wp-image-4716 " title="pylons sasco arizona airsoft stalker" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/DSCF2487-Modified-400x300.jpg" alt="DSCF2487 Modified 400x300 An Airsoft First Timer Tells All" width="320" height="240" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The pylons lead to the way to what&#39;s left of the mining tunnel. Lots of ambushes and betrayals here ...</p></div>
<p>My Monolith team &#8211; one of several teams in the game &#8211; has only four people. We’re overmatched and outgunned, with nary a true machine gun or sniper rifle among us. We try to compensate, bribing other teams (like Free Stalkers and Bandits) to harass, harry, heckle and harangue the team standing in as the Russian military.</p>
<p>The entire day of fun is the result of some hard work put in by a go-getter named Darr. He displays ambition, serious organizational chops and a real love for this game. Throughout the day, people rave about his scenario, which he based on the <a href="http://www.stalker-game.com/" ><em>S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl</em></a> video game. The remains of the smelter and skeleton of the mining operation fill in nicely as a slice of the abandoned, irradiated Russian city called <a href="http://villageofjoy.com/chernobyl-today-a-creepy-story-told-in-pictures/" >Pripyat</a>. Darr has everything right: the game area, his ability to improvise, the props and layout. Success requires negotiation skills, duplicity and wariness (for the inevitable betrayals).</p>
<div id="attachment_4712" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 235px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/12/airsoft-first-timer/stalker/" rel="attachment wp-att-4712"><img class="size-medium wp-image-4712" title="stalker airsoft monolith" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/stalker-225x300.jpg" alt="stalker 225x300 An Airsoft First Timer Tells All" width="225" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Max, David and Henry were my Monolith teammates.</p></div>
<p>About 30 minutes pass before the teams open fire on each other. Until then, it’s a crock pot of diplomacy, misdirection, evaluation. I love the tension, especially next to the premature release of so many flavors of paintball games.</p>
<p>I learn a lot about Airsoft and the people who play it. They are professionals, college students, high schoolers. Some sit back to take advantage of cover, firepower, superior numbers. Others make and break deals at will. Some sneak through the creosote and ruins, unheard and unseen. Others stomp around in heavily armed herds. In short, there’s something for everyone.</p>
<p>But here’s what worries me about Airsoft, especially in Arizona &#8211; there are few convenient places to organize awesome events like this. And too few people willing to do the heavy lifting of contacting the owners and managers of empty spaces. Sasco is terrific, but remote. I can think of several places within 30 minutes of the Phoenix area that would be perfect.</p>
<p>And the Airsoft industry needs to work harder to get more people involved. It should target every single <em>World of Warcraft</em>/<em>Call of Duty</em>/<em>Halo</em> fiend. If one out of every 50 uninitiated people permanently attached to gaming systems wound up on a field with a decent Airsfoft replica in-hand, profits and advocacy would soar. I’d also hit CrossFit gyms and all the people who love stuff like the <a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/05/the-warrior-dash-things-to-know/" >Warrior Dash</a> … fitness pays dividends in Airsoft. I could see a smart Airsoft shop (or manufacturer/brand) even holding a biathlon &#8211; running with your Airsoft replica and stopping to use it to hit targets every half mile. Provide loaners for people who don’t have their own &#8211; a perfect introduction.</p>
<div id="attachment_4711" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 235px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/12/airsoft-first-timer/stalker2/" rel="attachment wp-att-4711"><img class="size-medium wp-image-4711 " title="stalker airsoft monolith player" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/stalker2-225x300.jpg" alt="stalker2 225x300 An Airsoft First Timer Tells All" width="225" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Me!</p></div>
<p>From there? Get players talking about finding viable places to play just as much as they talk about gear (your fancy hop-up and tight-bore barrel will be more fun if you have more places to put them to work).</p>
<p>But those are thoughts for another time. For now, my bottom line: All credit to Darr for his imagination, thoroughness and commitment to crafting a really outstanding time for the Airsoft players from the Valley to Tucson. Поздравляю!</p>
</div>
<p><em>Check out Darr&#8217;s YouTube slideshow, and do note the groovy pirate-metal soundtrack. Avast!</em><br />

<p>One false move, and I could wind up impaled on a taxidermied whale penis. The walls bristle with them. All species. All sizes.</p>
<p>There are also clear acrylic capsules filled with them. Floating in preservative, maintaining their original glory.</p>
<p>Yes, whale penises are the centerpieces of the Iceland <a href="http://www.phallus.is/" target="_blank">Phallological Mueseum</a> in Husavik. It’s Husavik’s star attraction, and rising in fame internationally.</p>
<div id="attachment_3938" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 370px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5968/" rel="attachment wp-att-3938" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3938 " title="IMGP5968" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5968-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5968 400x266 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="360" height="239" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">You&#39;ve come to the right place.</p></div>
<p>The building is crammed with penis specimens. Field mice, cetaceans … just about everything under the sun.</p>
<p>Human? Yes, it’s on its way. You may have seen <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/12/icelands-penis-museum-get_n_847907.html" target="_blank">news reports</a> of the recently deceased Icelandic man who pledged his manhood to the museum upon death. I guess he beat out the guy pictured at the museum: an American, sitting on a stool. Wearing nothing but a smile. I’m guessing the room was chilly.</p>
<div id="attachment_3943" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5990/" rel="attachment wp-att-3943" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3943 " title="IMGP5990" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5990-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5990 400x266 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="320" height="213" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Ready for a whale of a time?</p></div>
<p>Iceland, by the way, is also crazy for team handball. You can see casts made from the members of the members of the Icelandic team after winning silver at a recent team handball World Cup.</p>
<p>When you enter, the curator gives you a thick binder and a “how to tell what sort of wang you’re looking at” primer.</p>
<p>This attraction is definitely worth ejecting a few krona. The lighting could be better for photography. And it should open earlier (we had a flight to catch in Akureyri in a few hours).</p>
<div id="attachment_3942" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5983/" rel="attachment wp-att-3942" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3942 " title="IMGP5983" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5983-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5983 400x266 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="320" height="213" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Husavik - a pleasant town in the far north.</p></div>
<p>We started our day in Reykjahliđ, our base for nearly three days of tromping around Myvatn. We broke our camp at Vogar and headed west in our Suzuki Jimney. We headed in the back way to Husavik, up Road 87. The Jimney gamely cruised along, even after the road turned to dirt.</p>
<p>We saw few cars. The scenery was green, but not exactly lush. No surprise there: Less than one percent of Iceland’s land is arable. Yet there was still the occasional farmstead and meandering herd of sheep.</p>
<div id="attachment_3941" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5980/" rel="attachment wp-att-3941" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3941" title="IMGP5980" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5980-400x262.jpg" alt="IMGP5980 400x262 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="400" height="262" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A horse grazes near Husavik.</p></div>
<p>You have to be careful on unpaved roads, so it’s best to keep the speed down. Especially in the successor to the Suzuki Samurai! After a few hours, we arrived in Husavik.</p>
<p><strong>30 Miles from the Arctic Circle</strong></p>
<p>This is as far north as I’ve ever been. A chilly wind blew in from the water. Husavik is a very beautiful town, though. Since the Phallus Museum is ready for action until 11 a.m., we had some time to kill. We roamed the town, had coffee, petted horses.</p>
<div id="attachment_3940" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 370px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5975/" rel="attachment wp-att-3940" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3940 " title="IMGP5975" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5975-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5975 400x266 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="360" height="239" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">More horses!</p></div>
<p>It’s very tranquil. Groups of kids going to and from soccer practice roamed around. It’s the sort of place where people probably don’t lock their doors &#8211; ever. Some rolling hills, beautiful views of the ocean, snow-capped mountains not too far distant.</p>
<p>We also hit a bakery for a few snacks while we waited.</p>
<p><strong>Racing to the Airport</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_3937" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/the-iceland-epic-husavik-and-reykjavik/imgp5966/" rel="attachment wp-att-3937" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3937" title="IMGP5966" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/IMGP5966-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5966 400x266 The Iceland Epic Husavik and Reykjavik" width="400" height="266" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The harbor at Husavik.</p></div>
<p>I drove the Jimney for all it was worth. We pulled into Akureyri with time to spare, long enough to grab a falafel. We turned in our Jimney, boarded the plane and headed back to Reykjavik.</p>
<p>We checked back into Guesthouse Isafold, our reliable Reyjkavik base. And then we finally rested. Because our day isn’t over: Tonight, we’re running the <a href="http://www.marathon.is/midnaeturhlaup" >Miđnæturhlaup</a>, a 10k race that starts at 10 p.m. The name means Midnight Run.</p>
<p>It’s perhaps the most pleasant 10k ever: Two laps through the zoo/botanical garden area, followed by a nice free soak at the <a href="http://www.spacity.is/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=17&amp;Itemid=33" >Laugardalslaug swimming pool</a> we’ve come to love. All in nearly full sunlight, by the way. The clouds broke and we had beautiful temperatures in the 50s. With sun and sweat, that was perfect. And the hot tubs were crammed with our fellow runners and their families. Good times!</p>
<p>How’d I do? First American finisher! You can <a href="../2010/09/recapping-the-reykjavik-midnight-run-10k/">read my full post about it</a>.</p>

<p><em>Today, I have something a little different for you: Tom from the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.headingthere.co.uk/" target="_blank">HeadingThere UK</a> website is here with a guest post about his trip to Sierra Leone. Enjoy his tales and his great photos! -Wandering Justin</em></p>
<p>As the doors opened, a smell started to fill the plane. Not unpleasant, but sweet and hot with a hint of spice. It was unfamiliar and exciting, the smell of Africa. I felt beads of sweat forming on my brow as the temperature rose. We didn&#8217;t know what to expect from Sierra Leone.</p>
<div id="attachment_3926" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/sierra-leone-beaches-and-bbq-in-africa/sierra-leone-376/" rel="attachment wp-att-3926" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3926" title="Sierra Leone 376" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Sierra-Leone-376-400x300.jpg" alt="Sierra Leone 376 400x300 Sierra Leone Beaches and BBQ in Africa" width="400" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">That&#39;s one sweet beach ... Imagine what Rico the Air New Zealand mascot would say!</p></div>
<p>Once we got over our trepidation at visiting such an unusual destination, the thing that really struck us was what a fantastic holiday destination the country is. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.headingthere.co.uk/guide/africa/sierra+leone/" >Sierra Leone beaches</a>, for example, are some of the best in Africa. We were lucky enough to get the chance to have a beach barbecue while we were in Freetown. We got chatting to one of the lads who sold beads outside our hotel, he was friends with a chef and told me that they sometimes organised barbecues on the beach for tourists. He asked if we were interested and I thought, “why not?”</p>
<div id="attachment_3925" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/sierra-leone-beaches-and-bbq-in-africa/sierra-leone-368/" rel="attachment wp-att-3925" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3925 " title="Sierra Leone 368" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Sierra-Leone-368-400x300.jpg" alt="Sierra Leone 368 400x300 Sierra Leone Beaches and BBQ in Africa" width="320" height="240" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">That&#39;s a spectacular sunset.</p></div>
<p>I’m so glad we did. as it was one of the highlights of our visit. We ate delicious fresh fish as we watched the sun go down, and then enjoyed a few cold beers by the light of a bonfire. Remarkably, the Sierra Leone national dance troupe also performed at our BBQ!</p>
<p>Our friend the bead seller clearly had connections all over Freetown &#8211; he was also friends with one of the dancers. For a small fee they came along and sang and danced for us; the music and drumming was amazing. They sang us a song of welcome to open their show and the noise drew attention from a lot of locals who had been passing by. One lady enjoyed it so much she joined in, dancing past singing “Welcome to Freetown!”</p>
<div id="attachment_3924" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/sierra-leone-beaches-and-bbq-in-africa/sierra-leone-363/" rel="attachment wp-att-3924" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3924 " title="Sierra Leone 363" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Sierra-Leone-363-400x300.jpg" alt="Sierra Leone 363 400x300 Sierra Leone Beaches and BBQ in Africa" width="320" height="240" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">More nice scenery on the water.</p></div>
<p>I found out later that when Prince Charles visited Sierra Leone he was also welcomed by the national dance troupe.  It really is a testament to how relaxed things are in Sierra Leone. Can you imagine having the Royal Shakespeare Company coming to perform at your picnic if you visited London?!<br />
For the bulk of our visit we travelled south to the beaches of the Freetown Peninsula. They are absolutely stunning, and our experience of staying in a small eco-village in John Obey was amazing.</p>
<div id="attachment_3923" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 294px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/sierra-leone-beaches-and-bbq-in-africa/sierra-leone-355/" rel="attachment wp-att-3923" ><img class="size-full wp-image-3923 " title="Sierra Leone 355" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Sierra-Leone-355.jpg" alt="Sierra Leone 355 Sierra Leone Beaches and BBQ in Africa" width="284" height="213" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Beach lover? Then put Sierra Leone on your short list.</p></div>
<p>Sierra Leone is one of the most exciting places I have ever been, so don’t let shocked looks from your friend’s put you off visiting! Flights to Freetown are quite straightforward to organise from the UK, there are flights via several major European cities. If you are travelling from the United States, it can be hard to find flights when you search for the whole journey. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it, though: We met lots of Americans in Sierra Leone. Try looking at flights separately. Think about flying Delta (as they work with Air France, who fly to Freetown from Paris) or any of the Star Alliance airlines. If you are flying Star Alliance you could change in London to BMI or in Brussels to Brussels Airlines.</p>
<div id="attachment_3922" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/04/sierra-leone-beaches-and-bbq-in-africa/sierra-leone-352/" rel="attachment wp-att-3922" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3922" title="Sierra Leone 352" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Sierra-Leone-352-400x300.jpg" alt="Sierra Leone 352 400x300 Sierra Leone Beaches and BBQ in Africa" width="400" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Oooo, now we&#39;ve got mountains, too!</p></div>

<p><span style="line-height: 19px; font-size: 13px;">Can a cloud of flies lift a person off the ground? I am about to find out on the south shore of Myvatn (Mee-VAH-ten).</span></p>
<p>That name, by the way, means business. <em>Vatn</em> is Icelandic for “water.” What’s “<em>my</em>?” <a rel="nofollow" href="http://provenpatterns.blogspot.com/2011/03/midge-follow-up.html" target="_blank">Midge</a>. As in those pesky flies that are threatening to carry me off. They’re everywhere. This means we are in a place that means “Fly Water.” Myvatn is a shallow lake ringed by some spectacular scenery: more <a href="http://www.agu.org/journals/ABS/2001/2000JE001378.shtml" >pseudocraters</a>, and one of the most bizarre mountains ever. More on that later.</p>
<p>As for the flies, some folks at a convenience store sold Sarah and me a lovely matched set of insect nets for our heads and faces. Problem abated. Somewhat.</p>
<div id="attachment_3799" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 250px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/03/iceland-diaries-day-8/imgp5712/" rel="attachment wp-att-3799"><img class="size-medium wp-image-3799 " title="IMGP5712" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/IMGP5712-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5712 400x266 The Iceland Epic Day 8 (Reykjavik Akureyri Myvatn)" width="240" height="160" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Our rented Suzuki Jimney</p></div>
<p>But I’m getting ahead of myself.</p>
<p><strong>Flight to Iceland&#8217;s Northern Big City</strong></p>
<p>To get here, we started with an early Flug Island (or Air Iceland, the domestic arm of IcelandAir) <a href="http://www.epictrip.com/search-result?cx=003122511982071834731:3ceta1ofpmy&amp;cof=FORID:11&amp;sa=Search&amp;q=flights%20in%20iceland" >flight from Reykjavik’s domestic airport</a>. We walked from our guesthouse right to the terminal. Our fellow passengers were mostly English, and they were dressed from some horse-riding fun.</p>
<p>We landed in Akureyri, the main city of northern Iceland. We rented a <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Jimny" >Suzuki Jimny</a> and rattled off to the west. We had some epic mountain scenery, and we enjoyed a brief stop at a waterfall. We made another brief stop to get our anti-fly nets &#8211; and had a nice lunch of soup and trout that had been smoked over sheep dung. Regardless of the fuel source, it was delicious.</p>
<div id="attachment_3800" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 352px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/03/iceland-diaries-day-8/imgp5716/" rel="attachment wp-att-3800"><img class="size-full wp-image-3800 " title="IMGP5716" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/IMGP5716.jpg" alt="IMGP5716 The Iceland Epic Day 8 (Reykjavik Akureyri Myvatn)" width="342" height="512" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">One of Iceland&#39;s many waterfalls.</p></div>
<p>We followed that up with <a rel="nofollow" href="http://bruno-wp.blogspot.com/2008/10/pseudocraters-of-skutustadhir.html" >a 45-minute hike</a> around the pseudocraters.</p>
<p><strong>And then for a major centerpiece of my Iceland experience: We headed for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimmuborgir" >Dimmuborgir</a>.</strong></p>
<p>But before we got near Dimmuborgir, I noticed something strange: One single mountain that seemed illuminated. It was an overcast day, and it was like one single ray of sunshine penetrated the clouds and fixed on this mountain. This is the Hverir thermal area. It stands out from all the surrounding terrain. We plan to make a thorough visit tomorrow.</p>
<p>This is also the name of well-known black metal band, and it means “Dark Castle.” This region gets this name from the massive expanse of hardened lava that froze in all sorts of interesting shapes. It sprawls for quite a distance. There are massive spires, tiny lava tubes, holes … it’s too unearthly to really describe well. It’s stark and scorched, and completely engrossing.</p>
<p><strong>Hverfjall: As Cool as it Sounds</strong></p>
<p>If you’re up for a long hike, you can follow a trail and climb to the top of Hverfjall explosion crater. Sarah and I circled the base, climbed from the (easier) northern trail, fully circled the rim, and descended the south trail before heading back to Dimmuborgir. Total distance is a little more than 6 miles.</p>
<div id="attachment_3802" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/03/iceland-diaries-day-8/imgp5735/" rel="attachment wp-att-3802"><img class="size-medium wp-image-3802" title="IMGP5735" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/IMGP5735-200x300.jpg" alt="IMGP5735 200x300 The Iceland Epic Day 8 (Reykjavik Akureyri Myvatn)" width="200" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Part of the pseudocrater field near Myvatn</p></div>
<p><strong>Relaxation, Trout and Stout</strong></p>
<p>By this point, we were a little peckish. We’d heard about the <a href="https://www.vogafjos.net/" >Cowshed Cafe</a>, so we stopped. It’s a working dairy in addition to a restaurant. You can eat while watching cows get milked.</p>
<p>As we were eating more trout, a salad and some fresh geysir bread, one of the cafe staff made the rounds to all the tables to pass out little cups. They were filled with fresh, unpasteurized milk straight out of the teat of the cow getting milked.</p>
<p>Warm, creamy, frothy … but not as heavy as I expected. A clean finish!</p>
<p>Our next step was a little relaxation at the town pool (we were in Reykjahliđ). Despite this being a town of 300, the pool facilities are superior to what you’ll find in my city of some 1.4 million people. Hot tubs, weight rooms, lap lanes … nice!</p>
<p>From there, we headed to the Vogar campgrounds. We put our tent up on the northern shore of Myvatn. Here on the north side, the midges are considerably less active. Once we had the tent up, we wandered the main street a bit and met some of the local horses.</p>
<div id="attachment_3803" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/03/iceland-diaries-day-8/imgp5751/" rel="attachment wp-att-3803"><img class="size-medium wp-image-3803" title="IMGP5751" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/IMGP5751-400x266.jpg" alt="IMGP5751 400x266 The Iceland Epic Day 8 (Reykjavik Akureyri Myvatn)" width="400" height="266" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Looking toward the huge crater of Hverfjall</p></div>
<div>
<p>We also wrapped up the day’s gustation with a nice chocolate cake and a shared bottle of Lava. This is an imperial-style stout brewed in the south of Iceland. It was the only good beer we found in Iceland, and it was the equal of just about any microbrew from the United States. I’d say it is on par with the Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy of <a href="http://www.uptake.com/colorado/longmont.html" >Longmont, Colo</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Snoozing by Myvatn</strong></p>
<p>After all this buzzing around, we were pretty tired. Though the sun only peaked below the horizon for a few hours and the sky never fully darkened, we got a great night of sleep on the soft grass of the Vogar.</p>

<p>It’s not easy to rattle Icelanders. But I’ve just figured out how to get a sure-fire rise out of an Icelandic glacier guide: Tell them you’ve been on New Zealand’s Franz Josef Glacier.</p>
<p>“People die there!” Gisli exclaimed, sounding dismayed that we&#8217;d got there.</p>
<p>How’d this come up? Well. I’d guess it was my polished crampon and ice axe technique. And maybe knowing a few tidbits about glaciers &#8211; like what makes the ice turn blue. After talking to me for awhile, Gisli’s fellow guide (whose name I can’t remember) said something like “you’ve done this before.”</p>
<div id="attachment_3390" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 330px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g2/" rel="attachment wp-att-3390" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3390 " title="g2" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g2-400x267.jpg" alt="g2 400x267 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="320" height="214" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Gisli is ready to lead us onto the glacier.</p></div>
<p>Darn tootin’, we had. Nearly five hours on the ice at Franz Josef. That thing’s a monster. Apparently, <a href="http://www.infonews.co.nz/default.cfm?l=164&amp;t=113" >a tourist-eating monster</a> that just weeks earlier had claimed a few more lives. To be fair, it’s not the glacier’s fault. Don’t do stuff your guides tell you not to do.</p>
<div id="attachment_3392" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g4/" rel="attachment wp-att-3392" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3392" title="g4" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g4-200x300.jpg" alt="g4 200x300 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="200" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">We&#39;re thrilled to be back on a glacier.</p></div>
<p>So far, the crew at <a href="http://www.glacierguides.is/" >Glacier Guides</a> had found Sarah and I to be pretty much model glacier hikers. We take care of our gear, we pay attention to their instructions and we have one helluva time. (See more info about Glacier Guides at the end of the post).</p>
<p>It’s easy for us to have a great time on a glacier. We loves the things. This time, we were on Falljökull (pronounced Fall-yuck-cuddle), which means “falling glacier.” That’s because of the way it seems to spill over the nearby mountain, plunging down the cliffs. It’s a seriously beautiful glacier, with an epic, sweeping view of the landscape. I could’ve sat in the same place all day and just looked at the landscape.</p>
<div id="attachment_3393" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g5/" rel="attachment wp-att-3393" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3393" title="g5" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g5-400x267.jpg" alt="g5 400x267 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="400" height="267" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A view of Falljokull from the bottom.</p></div>
<p>We were also pretty enthralled by the rushing water pouring over the glacier. You could drink it and enjoy some of the purest water you’ve ever tasted. Most of the guides had carabiners duct taped to plastic water bottles &#8211; they started the trip empty, and just filled them on the glacier. Silly me for showing up with a full Camelbak!</p>
<div id="attachment_3391" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g3/" rel="attachment wp-att-3391" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3391" title="g3" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g3-400x267.jpg" alt="g3 400x267 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="400" height="267" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A view from the top.</p></div>
<p>As you can see in the photos, it was actually warm on the glacier. It wasn’t what I’d call physically demanding. At the high point of the route, we ate the lunch the guides packed for us and headed back down. Yet again, Sarah looked sad when she handed her ice axe over.</p>
<div id="attachment_3394" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g6/" rel="attachment wp-att-3394" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3394" title="g6" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g6-200x300.jpg" alt="g6 200x300 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="200" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">A wall of ice.</p></div>
<p>Soon, we were back at our old school bus. We boarded and headed to Jökullsarlon, where we’d take a boat ride in the famous glacier lagoon. This was more fun than I expected. The lagoon and its icebergs will blow you away. And it looks different every time, too. So you won’t see the same bergs and growlers, but a whole new set.</p>
<p>And maybe your guide will fish a hunk of glaicer ice form the water and break it into chips for everyone to taste. It was a cool experience … sucking on a thousand-year-old ice cube.</p>
<p>There’s also a place to grab a snack. Go for the seafood soup if it’s a chilly or windy day.</p>
<div id="attachment_3396" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g8/" rel="attachment wp-att-3396" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3396" title="g8" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g8-400x266.jpg" alt="g8 400x266 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="400" height="266" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The Jokullsarlon, or glacier lagoon. Awesome!</p></div>
<p>After about 45 minutes in the lagoon, we boarded the school bus for the trip back to Skaftafell National Park. There, we gathered our packs from the Glacier Guides office, pitched our tents and caught up on our sleep. Some nearby backpackers also kept us entertained by singing Joan Osborne tunes. It was a most magnificent day on the glacier. I’d call it an essential part of anyone’s visit to Iceland.</p>
<div id="attachment_3395" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-5-skaftafell-falljokull-jokullsarlon/g7/" rel="attachment wp-att-3395" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3395" title="g7" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/g7-200x300.jpg" alt="g7 200x300 The Iceland Diaries Day 5 (Skaftafell, Falljökull, Jökullsarlon) " width="200" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">An icy treat that&#39;s nice to eat.</p></div>
<p><em>About Glacier Guides: This is a very friendly, competent guide service. They gave us a lift from Skaftafell to Hof the previous day so we could get to our guesthouse (our bus didn’t go there). Then they picked us up for the glacier hike the next day and stored our backpacks while we were out having fun. They were accommodating and informative. I highly recommend Glacier Guides. If you see an Icelandic sheep dog named Hekla with one of the guides, give her a scratch between the ears and tell her Sarah and Justin say hello.</em></p>

<p>Dokna could easily allow herself to be the world’s saddest dog. She loves sticks &#8211; but some cruel twist of fate has put her in <a href="http://realtravel.com/d-18627-kirkjubaejarklaustur" target="_blank">Kirkjubae &#8211; jarklaustur, Iceland</a>.</p>
<p>Klaustur, as it’s often called, has as many sticks as Arizona has native species of whales. Trees? The people at the Hotel Laki Efri-Vik where Dokna lives have planted some, but that’s about it. They rarely shed branches. Those that fall to the ground are limp and perhaps a bit unsatisfying. When she does find a stick, she bounces side-to-side on her front paws until you throw it for her. This happens often enough to keep her happy.</p>
<p>Dokna &#8211; whose name I am probably misspelling and is the Icelandic word for “Spot” &#8211; also amuses herself by latching onto hotel guests and walking around with them. <span id="more-3360"></span></p>
<div id="attachment_3354" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 410px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-4-kirkjubaejarklaustur-hof/kirk2/" rel="attachment wp-att-3354" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3354" title="kirk2" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/kirk2-400x266.jpg" alt="kirk2 400x266 The Iceland Diaries Day 4 (Kirkjubaejarklaustur Hof)" width="400" height="266" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Sarah finds the remains of an old hut and ducks out of the wind.</p></div>
<p>She saw us and probably thought, “yes, a nice trot around them lake!” Six miles of exploring the pseudocrater landscape later, she curled up on her territory for a well-earned rest. She will long carry the memory of the two people who marched with her through the landscape &#8211; and even found some sheep-rib bones to throw for her to fetch. This made Dokna one happy dog, even though she concluded that the two people looking for the hollowed-out mound in the crater field were certifiably crazy.</p>
<p>Well, we had calories to burn from the usual huge Icelandic breakfast spread: rye bread, herring, cheese spread, jam, cheese. Good fuel for marching around this bizarre landscape of spires, bubbles, dips and spongy grass. We never found the elusive hollow crater, but we found what might’ve been the remains of an ancient shepherd’s hideout.</p>
<div id="attachment_3355" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2011/01/the-iceland-diaries-day-4-kirkjubaejarklaustur-hof/kirk3/" rel="attachment wp-att-3355" ><img class="size-medium wp-image-3355" title="kirk3" src="http://wanderingjustin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/kirk3-200x300.jpg" alt="kirk3 200x300 The Iceland Diaries Day 4 (Kirkjubaejarklaustur Hof)" width="200" height="300" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">It&#39;s a weird landscape ... and Dokna is getting tired.</p></div>
<p>We were headed to the area near <a href="http://www.nat.is/travelguideeng/skaftafell.htm" >Skaftafell National Park</a>. So we gave Dokna a final scratch between the ears, got a lift to Klaustur and headed to the <a href="http://www.frostandfire.is/english/hof/hof_home.html" >Guesthouse Frost and Fire in Hof</a>. There’s not much to Hof &#8211; a small village, a sod-roofed church straight out of a fantasy novel, some guest houses. The Frost and Fire is clean and comfortable. It also serves up a tasty dinner of lamb for people just a few days into their trip with already a generous number of miles on their legs.</p>
<p>Tomorrow is yet another one of those days that Sarah and I have anticipated like kids before Christmas: It’s glacier day.</p>
<p>Because of <a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2009/03/glacier/" >Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand</a>, glaciers are now a focal point of our travel. We pore through guide books and websites looking for chances to set foot on a glacier.</p>
<p>And tomorrow, we find out what an Icelandic glacier is like.</p>

<p>Do you want to see cool stuff? Sure you do, or you wouldn&#8217;t be here.</p>
<p>Well, my fellow travelers at the Heading There blog are going to set you up. Heading There likes to round up interesting posts from bloggers around the globe. The Heading There crew picks a theme, and some fine writers kick in their contributions to inspire you to out and travel.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.headingthere.co.uk/Blog/?p=869" >This week&#8217;s theme is &#8230; adventure!</a> As you might guess, I have something to say about this &#8211; I pitched in with a tale about the <a href="http://wanderingjustin.com/2009/03/rappelling-into-the-dark-the-glow-worm-caves-of-waitomo/" >glowworm caves</a> in Waitomo, NZ. I&#8217;m flying the flag for Arizona travelers, even if not Arizona destinations this time. Also, you can (and should &#8230; nay, <em>must!</em>) check out what other travelers in Tom&#8217;s Blog Carnival are up to. He&#8217;s got people from all over the world finding some terrific destinations all over the map.</p>
<p>My favorite? <a href="http://www.heatheronhertravels.com/mer-de-glace-montenvers-chamonix/" >Heather&#8217;s trip to the Mer de Glace</a>. What&#8217;s cooler than glacier caves? Not a whole lot, really! Seriously, if you&#8217;ve not explored a glacier, it&#8217;s high time you did. It will blow you away in ways I can&#8217;t begin to explain.</p>
<p>Hmm, on second thought, it might be Simon and Erin&#8217;s tales about their <a href="http://www.neverendingvoyage.com/bolivia-salt-flats-salar-de-uyuni-part-1/" >visit to the salt flats in Bolivia</a>. That&#8217;s been a destination rising up on my list like a giant bubble of good times.<br />
